Gamification of Vending Machines: McDonald’s x Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock
We were approached by McDonald’s to tackle an interesting problem: devise an interactive vending game based on Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock game made popular by The Big Bang Theory TV show. Our objective was to create a pleasing functionality in the customers’ interaction with the restaurant while cementing the McDonald’s brand.
The Interactive Smart Vending Machine Game
We made the drastic measures of creating a tailor made Smart Vending Machine embedded with experiential technology to achieve this vision. This means that users were able to play the Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock game on the machine in an interactive way. After making their choice on the touch screen of the machine, they play against it in real time in order to win special prizes of McDonald’s.
Enhancing Customer Engagement
Smart Vending Machine was visually fun and provided the opportunity to entertain consumers with interaction with the brand. The design of the game was intended to be highly straightforward and fun in order to create an enjoyable environment for the customers of McDonalds. The conceptualization of the game encouraged more people to participate in the activity and created fun sight of the usual bottled vending machine.
Creating an Innovative Brand with the Help of Technology
Using Smart Vending Machine technology and an appealing pop-cultural addition such as a video game, we created a memorable brand activation for McDonald’s. This tailor-made entertainment was infused with a combination of fun, participation, and prizes that were branded, so it was no surprise that it went down well with all the fans of the chain and its Big Bang Theory advertisement.
