Merrell Colorado Rockies Hiking Experience: A Smart Vending Machine Powered Activation

Merrell asked us to let everyone experience the Colorado Rockies and give back to the community. Our solution was an interactive Smart Vending Machine powered activation where we rewarded participants for their physical activity. We created a one of a kind hiking game that measured users steps in real time, with each step unlocking rewards from a custom Smart Vending Machine.

Smart Vending Machine Tech Experience Brings the Rockies to Life

To make it a real brand experience we went to the Colorado Rockies and filmed an actual hike, capturing the beauty of the trails. This footage became the basis for a virtual hiking game where participants hiked the Rockies. We used custom footpads and guests simulated the hike and each step counted towards unlocking rewards from the Vending Machine.

The Vending Machine was a key part of the activation, adding a fun physical element to the campaign. As guests burned calories and hiked virtually, they were rewarded with Merrell swag from the Vending Machine based on their hiking performance.

Data Capture and Customer Engagement through Smart Vending Machines

Over the 6 week activation the Smart Vending Machine provided a easy way to capture data and customer engagement. Every interaction with the machine was tracked in real time, so Merrell could get valuable insights into customer behavior and preferences. The Smart Vending Machine interface was designed to encourage repeat engagement, as participants came back to try and hike further, unlock more rewards and give more to Merrell’s charity.

With every step counted and displayed on the Smart Vending Machine, users could see their progress and celebrate their achievements. The instant feedback and reward of unlocking rewards deepened customer loyalty and drove real engagement.
